Marquette Drops Tough 4-3 Decision To No. 43 Drake

The Marquette University men's tennis team (6-6) dropped a tough 4-3 decision to No. 43 Drake (13-1) Sunday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium in non-conference action.
The loss was the first of the season for the Golden Eagles in six matches at home. The victory for Drake was the team's 12th straight.
"It was a tough loss for the guys," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "They worked really hard and put themselves in position to beat a really good team and just couldn't finish. We served for the first sets at No. 4 and No. 6, but didn't get those first sets."To beat a team as good as Drake we needed to take care of those opportunities, because we would have had five first sets on the board and given us the upper hand in the match," Rodecap added. "We need to rebound because we have another great opportunity at home on Thursday against Michigan State."
Marquette posted wins at the top two singles positions, with both Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Dan Mamalat earning victories. Gutierrez Crowley downed 82nd-ranked Anis Ghorbel 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 at the No. 1 spot and Mamalat made quick work of DU's Jean Erasmus in a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Freshman Cameron Tehrani picked up his 15th win of the season and ninth in the last 10 outings when his opponent was forced to retire.
The Bulldogs opened the match by claiming the doubles point, earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Golden Eagles shuffled their doubles lineup and Mamalat and senior Jonathan Schwerin responded with a hard-fought 9-7 win at the No. 1 spot over DU's Cesar Bracho and Alen Salibasic. The MU tandem trailed 6-4 before rallying for the win.
Marquette wraps up a three-match homestand March 8 at 5 p.m. when the squad hosts Michigan State.
