The No. 17/17 Marquette University men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) returns to action Tuesday night when the squad faces Grambling State (0-1, 0-0 SWAC) at 6 p.m. CT in the BMO Harris Bradley Center. The Golden Eagles, who are in the midst of a four-game homestand to begin the campaign, will be making their debut on FOX Sports 1. Brian Anderson (play-by-play) and Brevin Knight (analyst) will call the action for the national broadcast on the new flagship network of the BIG EAST?Conference. The Golden Eagles are 14-0 all-time versus opponents from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, including the season-opening 63-56 decision against Southern Friday night.
Box Score Provides Record Free Throw Trips
Marquette's box score from the season-opening win over Southern provides a number of talking points regarding rule changes in 2013-14 and might be a glimpse to what MU fans might see all season long.
The Golden Eagles shot a school-record 53 free throws in the victory, netting 52.4 (33-of-63) of the team's total points from the charity stripe. The total surpassed the previous record of 50 attempts, set against Savannah State on Nov. 21, 2003 in a 79-41 MU win.
MU netted just 13 field goals Friday night, with senior Davante Gardner and junior Todd Mayo accounting for 10 of the baskets. Marquette's 53 free throw chances nearly matched the total field goal opportunities (59) collected by Southern.
Of the 11 Marquette players to see action, eight made at least one trip to the charity stripe. Gardner led the parade, finishing 15-of-20 on the night to post personal bests in both attempts and makes in a single game.
MU Owns Extended Home Court Winning Streak
Marquette is currently in possession of a 26-game winning streak (second-longest active streak in the nation) at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
After falling 74-57 to Vanderbilt on Dec. 29, 2011, MU collected a perfect 9-0 record at home in BIG EAST play (15-1 overall) in 2011-12 en route to a best-ever second-place finish (14-4) in the league. The Golden Eagles finished 16-0 at home in 2012-13 and completed their second-straight season of league play undefeated with a win over Notre Dame en route to a share of the league's regular season title.
In just over 24 seasons of play at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, Marquette owns an impressive overall record of 330-87 (.791) and a 55-13 (.809) mark in BIG EAST action.
Marquette claimed an amazing 81-straight home games from 1967-73 for the longest run in school history and is tied for the fifth-longest in NCAA?history.
