Marquette Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association honored the Marquette University women's volleyball team on Wednesday, Aug. 7 with the AVCA Team Academic Award, highlighting the Golden Eagles' accomplishments in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year.

The award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

"Excellence doesn't happen by accident, either on the court or in the classroom," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It takes consistent preparation, relentless effort, and determined leadership. A full year of academic achievement, by an entire team of individual students, is a remarkable achievement. What better way to start a new season than with a celebration of an award so emblematic of all that is necessary for sustained success."

The Golden Eagles, who achieved a cumulative GPA of above a 3.4, were led in the classroom by junior Catherine Mayer, who maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average through 2012-13 and has served as an athletic department tutor during her time in Blue and Gold.

The squad also included graduating senior Danielle Carlson who was honored as the 2012-13 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner for women's volleyball and earned the league's institutional female scholar-athlete award in February. She was also the only women's volleyball player in the conference to earn Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in 2012.

Marquette begins its 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 30 at Bowling Green in the Hampton Inn Invitational.
