MILWAUKEE - Marquette University outside hitter Autumn Bailey was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for a debut performance which included all-tournament honors at the Hampton Inn Invitational against Bowling Green and No. 13 BYU.
Bailey averaged 5.00 kills and 3.33 digs per set over the weekend, which included team highs of 19 kills and 16 digs in her collegiate debut Friday against BGSU and 26 kills in MU's 3-2 loss to BYU.
Bailey's 26 kills against the Cougars were the most for an MU player since Nov. 24, 2007 when fellow Canadian Kim Todd and Ashlee Fisher notched 29 and 27 kills, respectively, against South Dakota State. The Burlington, Ontario native also added 14 digs vs. BYU and four blocks on the afternoon while hitting .300.
She is Marquette's first freshman of the week honoree since setter Chelsea Heier earned the award on Nov. 15, 2011. Heier also claimed BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors that season.
The Golden Eagles will return to Milwaukee to host No. 3 USC and TCU in the Marquette Challenge on Sept. 6-7 at the Al McGuire Center. Friday's home opener against the Trojans will feature a welcome back Pizza Hut pizza party for the first 200 students as well as MU's first camper reunion day of the season.
