The Golden Eagles (13-4) have won nine of their last twelve games, and the combined deficit in the three losses was a mere six points. After a tough 49-47 loss at home to St. John's on Jan. 18, Marquette rebounded with an 87-79 victory over Providence at the Al McGuire Center this past Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Against the Friars MU managed to get its offensive attack back on track recording over 70 points for the 12th time this season and are a perfect 12-0 when this occurs. The Golden Eagles' calling card is their offense, which boasts the second highest point total per game in the conference at 74.2. Senior forward Katherine Plouffe, one of five Marquette players who scored double figures, led the way with 23 points, her seventh 20+ point game of the season. Katie Young also tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, earning her eighth double double of the season.
Creighton (11-8) fell on the road to Butler 58-52 in its most recent action on Jan. 18, with senior McKenzie Fujan leading the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Marissa Janning paces the Bluejays offensively averaging 19.3 points per contest. Creighton features a stingy defense that allows just 61.2 points a game, good for second in the BIG EAST Conference.
Saturday's meeting between the programs marks the first time Marquette and Creighton meet as members of the BIG EAST Conference. In a series dating back to 1986 Creighton holds the edge at 5-2.
