Marquette Hosts Pan Can Game Friday

MILWAUKEE - Friday's BIG EAST Conference opener against Cincinnati holds even more significance for the Marquette University women's lacrosse team as the contest represents the Golden Eagles' annual game in support of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
"I am thrilled to continue the tradition of hosting a Pan Can game again this year," Marquette head coach Meredith Black said. "This cause is so important to me personally, and to many of the players on my team. We love to feel that we can make a difference, even if just by spreading awareness about pancreatic cancer."
Marquette raised over $10,000 for the fight against pancreatic cancer last season and is over halfway to its goal in 2014 as it continues to accept donations through its FirstGiving profile online and will also do so at the game.
The Golden Eagles will appear at the Alumni Memorial Union on Wednesday and Thursday over the lunch hour to sell raffle tickets for special gift baskets and other items, with all proceeds benefiting the Milwaukee affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Raffle tickets are $5 each, $10 for three tickets or $20 for eight.
Three items will be raffled off at halftime of Friday's 6 p.m. game at Valley Fields, while the other seven items will be given away during MU's men's and women's double header at Hart Park on April 19.
"We hope that everyone who attends will help spread awareness of this horrible cancer," Black said. "We also would like to thank anyone and everyone who has supported us with this effort in the past and who will do so this season. We had so much success last year thanks to the efforts of the players and the parents of our program. We hope to continue to grow in these efforts each year."
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and one of the most painful and deadly.
All fans who attend the game are asked to wear the color purple to show their support for the fight against pancreatic cancer joining the Golden Eagles, who will don purple during pregame warm-ups.
The Golden Eagles (4-5) are coming off a 13-6 victory over Winthrop on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields in which sophomore Claire Costanza led the team with six points. Freshman attack Amanda Bochniak also tallied five points in victory and was named to the BIG?EAST?Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday.
The?Bearcats (6-3) enter Friday's contest as winners of five straight games, the last three of which came on their home turf. Cincinnati began the season with losses at then-No. 11 Notre Dame, a win at Stetson and a loss at then-No. 7 Florida.
Ashley Helmrath leads UC?with 27 points on the campaign, while five Bearcats have reached double digits in goals, led by Courtney Curtis' 18 markers.
The first 300 students to Friday's game will receive a free Marquette women's lacrosse t-shirt and pizza, courtesy of Pizza Hut.
