After a career-best event score and finish at the season-opening Badger Invitational this week, Marquette sophomore Matt Murlick was named BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.
Murlick posted a career-low 54-hole event (208, 8-under-par) and a career-best finish (T-4) to lead Marquette to a third-place showing at University Ridge G.C. Murlick (70-69-69) carded three straight sub-par rounds, highlighted by 14 birdies over 54 holes. His play helped MU to its lowest team event score (847, 17-under-par) since October of 2015.
MU was paired the final two rounds with No. 16 Texas A&M; Murlick finished four shots off the final pace set by Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips (12-under-par). Paired the last two rounds with Phillips, ranked No. 55 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Murlick moved up to second place in the final round after his eagle on the par 4 13th hole.
The conference player of the week honor is the second of Murlick's career (last - Oct. 5, 2016). Dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season, Marquette players have earned eight of the last 14 BIG EAST player of the week nods.
