Official BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Marquette University track and field juniors Daniel Armstrong and Breanne Marchan have earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced on Tuesday in its first set of weekly awards this season.
Both had impressive season debuts at the UW-Parkside Fall Finale on Friday as did the team as whole, setting 52 personal-bests, 11 top-10 marks and capturing 21 event victories.
Marchan, who was appointed a team co-captain in 2018-19 and earns her first career weekly honor, set personal-best and top-10 marks and claimed victory in each of her three events on Friday. The Pine River, Wisconsin, native ran a time of 7.10 seconds (No. 2 all-time) in the 55 meters, 25.01 (No. 3 all-time) in the 200 meters and a long jump distance of 5.78 meters (18 feet, 11.75 inches) – good for No. 5 all-time in Marquette history.
Armstrong claims his third career indoor weekly award and fourth of his career overall after his impressive debut. The Michigan City, Indiana, native may have already punched his second-straight ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships as his winning height of 2.21 meters (7 feet, 3 inches) at Parkside on Friday ranks No. 2 in the nation.
He needed to clear his final attempt on each of his last two heights in order to secure his new personal-best, which also ranks No. 2 in Marquette history.
Ironically enough, it was nearly a year to the day that he won this same weekly award following the season's first meet in which he set the No. 2 mark in school history and second-best mark in the country.
The Golden Eagles conclude finals this week and enter winter break before returning to the track on Saturday, Jan. 19, for the Tierney Classic hosted by crosstown foe UW-Milwaukee.
