Both squads open indoor competition at UW-Parkside on Friday
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Bert Rogers and the Marquette University track and field programs have announced the 2018-19 men's and women's team captains ahead of the season's first indoor meet on Friday.
Leading the women's team are seniors Amy Gasperlin and Mary Hanson as well as junior Breanne Marchan, while the men are guided by seniors Will Eggers, Jon Klaiber, Brendan McKinney and Mathew Peter.
Gasperlin, a long sprinter and Maple Grove, Minnesota, native, helped lead the 4x800 relay team to a fourth-place finish at the BIG EAST outdoor championships in May. In an effort to improve her strength and stamina, she competed in her first cross country season and was the team's fifth-best runner in the season's final two races.
Hanson begins her track season as the team's top returning long-distance runner. The Dodgeville, Wisconsin, native led the cross country team in every race this fall, taking 28th place at the BIG EAST Championships and finishing in 67th place out of 300 runners at the NCAA Great Lakes regional.
Marchan, a junior from Pine River, Wisconsin, has contributed as a sprinter and jumper for the Golden Eagles in her first two seasons. At the 2018 BIG EAST outdoor championships, she made the podium in both the high jump and 4x100 relay with second place finishes, and nearly claimed a third medal after taking fourth place in the 200-meter dash. She also made the podium with a third-place high jump finish at the 2017 BIG EAST indoor championships.
Eggers is the school-record holder in the indoor heptathlon, totaling 5,234 points when he won the BIG EAST title in 2018. He finished as the BIG EAST runner-up in the outdoor decathlon in May and holds the third-highest point total (6,709) in the event in program history. The St. Paul, Minnesota, native has four BIG EAST podium finishes, including a 2016 decathlon title to go along with his win in the heptathlon in '18.
Klaiber put forth an inspiring fifth-place BIG EAST finish in the outdoor 10,000 meters last May and returns as one of the team's top distance runners this track season. The Naperville, Illinois, native completed a successful cross country season this fall, finishing as the team's top runner three times and claiming All-BIG EAST honors with a 14th-place finish.
McKinney represents the throwing unit following a strong junior campaign. In 2018, the Arlington Heights, Illinois, native claimed the BIG EAST outdoor hammer crown, while placing second in the discus and indoor weight throw. He has five BIG EAST podium finishes during his career and holds three top-10 program list marks in the discus, hammer and weight throw.
Peter, a hurdler from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, holds the program's fourth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time and seventh-best time in the 110-meter hurdles. In 2018, he placed second in each event at the BIG EAST indoor and outdoor championships, respectively.
The Golden Eagles kick off the indoor season on Friday, Dec. 7, at the Parkside Fall Finale hosted by UW-Parkside in Kenosha.
