NEW YORK - Marquette University junior Grace Gabriel has been named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week after her seven-point performance, including six goals, in a conference-opening victory over Cincinnati on Sunday, the league office announced today.
Gabriel paced the 21st-ranked scoring offense in the nation with her second sock trick of the season, once again tying the school's single-game goals record. She also added an assist, eight draw controls and a groundball in the win. Gabriel's three first-half tallies helped erase an 8-6 deficit in the first half of Sunday's BIG EAST opener against Cincinnati.
With time winding down in the first half, she broke an 8-8 tie to give Marquette a lead it would not relinquish.
The Lancaster, New York, native is the third-leading scorer in the nation and she leads the BIG EAST with 4.00 goals per game. She recently became the second-fastest player in program history to reach 100 career points and, through nine games this season, her 36 goals are five shy of her entire season total from a year ago. She's currently on pace for a would-be program record 68 goals.
The Golden Eagles (5-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) travel to Villanova on Saturday for a BIG EAST matchup, their first league contest on the road. First draw is set for 11 a.m. Central time.
