NEW YORK - The BIG EAST Conference has named junior Grace Gabriel Midfielder of the Week and sophomore Julianna Horning Defensive Player of the Week after impressive performances in a dominating win over Temple, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Gabriel, who was recognized for the third time this season, including her second midfielder of the week honor tallied four goals and five points in the win on Saturday over Temple, which was receiving votes in the last week's Inside Lacrosse top-20 poll.
The Lancaster, New York, native registered her ninth hat trick of the season before halftime and finished with her seventh game of at least four goals this year. Gabriel became Marquette's second player to record 100 career goals when she connected for her first score of the game to make it 4-0 with 24:29 left in the first half. She added three groundballs, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers in the win as well.
Horning, who enjoys her first-ever weekly award, held Temple to its second-lowest scoring output of the season after making 10 saves on Saturday. She made four stops on free position attempts in which the Owls went 0-for-6.
The four goals were the fewest allowed for her career and it marked the Berwyn, Pennsylvania, native's fifth double-digit save effort of the season. She collected her third-straight victory to keep Marquette unbeaten in league play and tied atop the BIG EAST standings. She also added two groundballs and a caused turnover in the win.
