NEW YORK - Marquette University grad student Joel Swanberg has been named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week following his record-setting performance in the pole vault, the league office announced on Monday.
Swanberg cleared 5.00 meters (16-4.75 feet), claimed the win, and set the school record in the pole vault at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative Meet on Saturday. It was a lifetime best for the Manhattan, Illinois, native and vaulted him to the top spot in the BIG EAST and tied for 57th in the West Region this season.
The reigning BIG EAST indoor pole vault champion improved his season-best mark by more than 7 inches to earn the victory.
Swanberg and the Golden Eagles head to Madison for the Wisconsin Alumni Classic on Friday, May 4 before gearing up for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, May 11-12.
