Official IWLCA Release
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University junior midfielder Grace Gabriel was named an IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team selection, while senior midfielder Allison Lane was a second team honoree, it was announced on Friday.
In 2017, Marquette garnered multiple all-region selections for the first time with Julianna Shearer and Gabriel each earning second team accolades. This year marks another groundbreaking achievement as Gabriel becomes the team's inaugural first team selection and, as a result, is now eligible for IWLCA All-America consideration. Meanwhile, Lane caps a sensational career with her first all-region award.
"I'm so proud of both Grace and Allison," said Marquette University head coach Meredith Black. "What they were able to accomplish this season was nothing short of amazing and the honors and awards they earned are well-deserved. They worked so hard to get to this point and truly represent two of the best players in this region."
Gabriel enjoyed a breakout junior campaign in 2018 with single-season school records in goals (56), points (67), draw controls (107) and caused turnovers (31), ranking in the BIG EAST's top-five in every category.
The Lancaster, New York, native was named the BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year and was a unanimous first team selection for the second-straight year. She earned the league's midfielder of the week honor four times, highlighted by 10 hat tricks, three sock tricks, and a Marquette single-game record 13 draw controls against Denver.
Lane set career-highs in every statistical category and was rewarded with her third-straight All-BIG EAST selection after being named to the first team for the second time in her career. She registered a point in every game this season and tallied at least one goal in every regular season contest, including 14 multi-goal efforts and seven hat tricks.
A stat-stuffing machine, the Asbury, New Jersey, native totaled 39 goals, 14 assists, 53 points, 47 ground balls, 82 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers. She finishes her career second all-time in career draws (183) and ground balls (111), third in goals (104) and fifth in points (130).
Gabriel and Lane were two of 128 student-athletes honored by the IWLCA, including 32 on the All-West/Midwest Region squads. Everyone selected to the first team are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-America teams, which will be announced in mid-June.
