MILWAUKEE - Junior midfielder Grace Gabriel has earned IWLCA All-America Second Team honors, it was announced on Thursday. She is the first Marquette women's lacrosse player to ever receive All-American distinction.
Gabriel's 56 goals, 67 points, 107 draw controls and 31 caused turnovers led the team and set single-season program records, while also ranking among the top-five in the BIG EAST in each category. She also led the Golden Eagles to a single-season record 10 victories, a BIG EAST-record six wins and the program's first-ever berth to the BIG EAST tournament.
"What an amazing accomplishment for Grace and milestone for our program," said Marquette head coach Meredith Black, who was an All-American in her own right, selected as a player during her senior season at Notre Dame in 2004. "Grace has worked so hard to get to this point and I can't think of anyone more deserving. She developed into a leader on and off the field and it was evident by her level of play and the team's success. I'm so proud of what she's been able to accomplish this season."
The Lancaster, New York, native registered 10 hat tricks, three sock tricks, and a Marquette single-game record with 13 draw controls against Denver. She was a BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week selection four times in 2018.
Gabriel's All-America bid caps a remarkable campaign in which she earned BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year honors and was a unanimous first team selection for the second time. She also claimed IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team accolades.
She was among 15 midfielders selected across the three All-America teams and one of just seven BIG EAST players.
