The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday at Michigan
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team fell to the University of Wisconsin, 2-0, on Monday evening at Valley Fields in its regular season home opener.
Junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry made six saves for the Golden Eagles (0-1-1), who were out-shot 16-5.
Emily Borgmann and Lauren Rice each scored for the Badgers (1-0-0), who have won the last two meetings in the all-time series.
The Badgers struck first just after halftime as Borgmann connected on a low shot that ricocheted off the right post and into the net. Cameron Murtha sent the ball up the right flank to just inside the 18-yard box for Rice, who then served it back towards the center of the pitch to Borgmann who hit the ball in stride for the first goal allowed by MU this season.
Wisconsin's second goal came from Rice off a corner she played short to Victoria Pickett. Rice took the ball back from Pickett and fired it in from the left flank after dribbling past her defender.
The Badgers now hold an 8-5-2 edge in the all-time series against Marquette, which resumed during the regular season for the first time since 2004.
The Golden Eagles resume action at Michigan on Thursday, Aug. 23 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
