A showdown with defending national champion Notre Dame highlights the schedule
MILWAUKEE-- Head coach Carolyn Kieger and the Marquette University women's basketball team has released the non-conference schedule for the 2018-19 campaign highlighted by five teams that reached the NCAA Tournament, including runners-up Mississippi State and the 2018 National Champions, Notre Dame.
"We are excited to announce this schedule," Kieger said. "With five NCAA Tournament teams from last season and the Preseason WNIT opportunity, we believe it is our most challenging schedule in recent years.
"We are thrilled to host the reigning national champion in the Al and have the opportunity to travel to compete against the runner-up Mississippi State. We know this schedule will prepare us for conference play and look forward to testing ourselves against the nation's best teams."
Marquette opens the 2018-19 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 6, hosting South Dakota State for its annual MPS Day matinee. The Jackrabbits finished 26-7 last season, falling to fellow-BIG EAST squad Villanova in overtime of the NCAA First Round.
The Golden Eagles will begin play in the 2018 Preseason WNIT hosting Montana State on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. Central time and will face either Northern Iowa or Delaware in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 11. MU could have two more games in the tournament with a likely road game occurring in round three. The championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. at a campus site.
MU returns home to host Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 24 and welcomes crosstown-foe Milwaukee to the Al on Wednesday, Nov. 28.Â
Big Ten squad Michigan will travel to Marquette on Sunday, Dec. 2. Last season the Wolverines narrowly topped the Golden Eagles, 82-76 in Ann Arbor and finished the 2017-18 with a 23-10 record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles will have back-to-back road games beginning at the 2018 national runners-up, Mississippi State on Thursday, Dec. 6 and at Northwestern on Sunday, Dec. 9 before heading back to Milwaukee to close out the non-conference schedule.
Perennial NCAA Tournament team Green Bay will visit the Al on Saturday, Dec. 15, followed by Binghamton University on Monday, Dec. 17, which leads to a showdown with reigning national champion Notre Dame on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. CT. In South Bend a year ago, Marquette pushed the Irish to a battle, before falling 91-85 in overtime.
Â
"With four 2018 NCAA Tournament teams playing at the Al this year we hope to showcase our best-ever attendance this season," Kieger said.
BIG EAST play will open in late December and the Golden Eagles will look to reach their third consecutive NCAA Tournament, returning all five starters from last season's squad.
Season tickets are currently on sale starting at $50 for general admission (upper level & lower bench), with lower-reserved chair back seats available for $100.
To purchase tickets call 414-288-GOMU (4668) to speak with a ticket representative or purchase online at GoMarquette.com/tickets. Mini-plans will be available in late-September with single game tickets on sale in October.
