More Golden Eagles earned All-BIG EAST Academic honors than ever before
NEW YORK – Over 200 Marquette University student-athletes were named to the 2017-18 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, the BIG EAST Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The men's lacrosse team's 31 representatives led the way for the 209 Golden Eagles to earn the honor, while the women's volleyball team had 13 of its 14 eligible student-athletes listed. The total of 209 is the most Marquette has ever put on the All-BIG EAST Academic Team, topping the 195 recorded in both 2014 and 2016.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member and nine affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 2,485 honorees for the 2017-18 academic year, the second-highest total in the five years since realignment.
Earlier this summer, four Golden Eagles were also recognized with 2017-18 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, including John Wagner of men's lacrosse, women's basketball player Allazia Blockton, Grace Gabriel of women's lacrosse and Derek Gross of men's track and field.
