Barber Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Werch Selected to Honor Roll

The senior and junior helped lead the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 start to BIG EAST play
NEW YORK-Â After a successful 3-0 week for the Golden Eagles, Marquette volleyball senior Allie Barber and junior Hope Werch were recognized for their outstanding efforts.

Barber was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Werch was named to the honor roll after the squad took down Butler, Seton Hall, and St. John's to open conference action, the league office announced on Tuesday.

In the midweek game against Butler, Barber put down 13 kills along with two digs in a 3-0 sweep. Against Seton Hall on Friday, the senior collected 16 kills with only one error to hit at a .429 mark in another sweep. On Sunday against St. John's, Barber racked up 16 kills to lead Marquette to a 3-1 victory. After the weekend, Barber moved up to sixth in the nation in total kills with 262 and 10th in kills per set at 4.70.

To add to the success, Werch set the tone for MU on both offense and defense, averaging 4.13 digs per set, 11 total kills, four service aces, and two blocks against conference foes in Butler and St. John's. The junior also led the team in digs over the two matches, collecting 13 in the Butler contest and 16 against St. John's.

The Golden Eagles remained at No. 10 this week in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

MU will hit the road for the first time in BIG EAST play as they travel to Cincinnati to take on Xavier at 11:00 a.m. CT on Wednesday, Oct. 2, its only game this week.
