MU will play five teams that finished in the IWLCA Top-25 last season
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Meredith Black and the Marquette University women's lacrosse program has released the 2020 regular season schedule. This year's slate includes eight home games, beginning with Cincinnati on Feb. 14 and ending with Denver on April 18.
Â
"I am really excited about this schedule," Black said. "As always, we have a very competitive non-conference schedule that should help prepare us for league play. We want to stay more consistent this year and grow from each game outside of league play. I believe that each game on this schedule will challenge us and prepare us to be our best."
Â
The Golden Eagles 2020 schedule is highlighted by four returning NCAA tournament teams and five that finished the 2019 season ranked in the IWLCA Top-25 poll. MU will play three teams that finished in the top 10 last season, including No. 4 Northwestern.
Â
"We really enjoy playing top 25 opponents because it gives us a measure of where we're at as a team and magnifies our growth as a program," she said.
The season begins on Sunday, Feb. 9 as MU travels to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish at noon CT. Coach Black and company will be looking for their first win over ND in program history. The Irish finished the 2019 season ranked as the No. 9 team in the nation after going 14-5.
Â
The Golden Eagles return home on Feb. 14 for their home opener on Valentine's Day against Cincinnati, who they've taken five of the past six matchups from.
Â
MU will then head to Louisville, Kentucky for a Monday matinee showdown with the Louisville Cardinals at 1 p.m. before coming home for the weekend to take on Canisius (Feb. 21) and Niagara (Feb. 23) on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Â
The following weekend, the Golden Eagles will fly down to Tempe, Arizona for two games at Arizona State University. MU will battle ASU on Thursday, Feb. 27 and Fresno State on Saturday, Feb. 29. Both games are scheduled to begin at noon CT.
Â
As March begins, MU hosts Central Michigan (March 4) and Ohio State (March 7) at Valley Fields before traveling to Detroit Mercy (March 11) for another mid-week test. High Point, who finished last season as the No. 24-ranked team in country, will come to Milwaukee for a non-conference clash on Saturday, March 14.
Â
After a nearly two-week break between games from March 15-27, the Golden Eagles are back in action to kick off BIG EAST play against Old Dominion. The conference lidlifter is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 11 a.m. at Valley Fields.
Â
"In conference play, our matchups against Georgetown, Denver and Villanova will be especially key," Black said. "If we can find a way to win those games, we will put ourselves in the best position to win the conference tournament."
MU will then take to the road for conference games at Villanova (April 3) and Georgetown (April 11) on consecutive weekends. Coach Black's team defeated then No. 24 Georgetown 14-12 last spring on senior day, marking the first time in program history that her team defeated a top 25 opponent.
Â
Following the road trip, the Golden Eagles will play their final home game of the season on April 18 against Denver at noon. This game also serves as the 'Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Game' and all fundraising from the day will go to supporting pancreatic cancer awareness and research. Senior day festivities will take place prior to the opening faceoff.
Â
MU closes its 2020 regular season with consecutive road games at Northwestern (April 21) and Butler (April 25) before the BIG EAST tournament takes place from April 30 to May 2 in Washington, D.C.
Â
Coach Black and the Golden Eagles will look to make their second consecutive appearance in the postseason after they hosted a BIG EAST tournament game for the first time in program history last May at Valley Fields.
