Three seniors set to lead MU into the 2020 season
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse program has announced Julianna Horning, Megan Menzuber and Kaitlyn Viviano as team captains for the 2020 season, which begins on Feb. 9 at Notre Dame.
Â
"This year's captains were identified by their teammates at the end of last year and they've done a terrific job already," said head coach Meredith Black, who enters her eighth season at the helm. "It's not an easy position to be in, but all of them have embraced it. They're committed to improving, making their teammates better and doing whatever it takes to help the team achieve its goals."
Â
Horning, a senior goalie, is the only second-year captain among her peers. The Berwyn, Pa., native ranks first all-time in MU history in wins (20) and saves per game (7.76) while placing second in saves (376). She's started 45 games in net over her first three years as a Golden Eagle and will look to close out her senior year as the best goalie in school history.
A senior attacker out of Chanhassen, Minn., Menzuber is the team's leading returning points-getter from last year. Her breakout 2019 season saw her score 32 goals (third on the team) and dish out 12 assists (tied for second). She ranks eighth all-time in program history in career goals (65) and seventh in assists (21).
Â
The third captain is Kaitlyn Viviano, a graduate student from West Islip, N.Y. The senior defender redshirted last season after suffering an injury prior to the season, but she played in 30 games during the first three years of her collegiate career at MU. She's collected 25 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers in those 30 games.
Â
The 2019 season marked significant progress in the seventh year of Meredith Black's tenure at MU. The Golden Eagles made the postseason for the second time in as many years, making the Big East Tournament semifinals.
Â
The team earned its highest-ever seed in the conference tournament (No. 2) and hosted a Big East Tournament game at Valley Fields for the first time in program history. On senior night, Marquette set another program record after a 14-12 victory over No. 24 Georgetown, marking MU's first-ever triumph over a top-25 opponent.
