Van Kleunen's 19 points leads the Golden Eagles
CHICAGO—The Marquette women's basketball team dropped its BIG EAST opener, 89-71, in a tough road game at DePaul on Sunday evening.
Redshirt junior Lauren Van Kleunen led a trio of Golden Eagles (9-3, 0-1) in double digits with a season-high 19 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor. Junior Selena Lott connected for 18 points, while senior Altia Anderson added 10 points. Sophomore Chloe Marotta pulled down seven boards for MU.
Marquette scored 44 points in the paint and combined to shoot 50 percent (27-54) as a squad, while the bench outscored the Blue Demons' (11-2, 1-0), 20-7.
"We have a long season ahead and a long BIG EAST season and we're going to keep fighting and go back to the drawing board to figure out our identity. We've got to figure out a way to take care of the ball and step up," head coach Megan Duffy said. "I thought we were tentative with our decision-making with stuff that was wide open and it led to some easy baskets from DePaul. Once they had those easy baskets, they had open three's and once you do that they are just too hard to stop."
DePaul was paces by Lexi Held with 22 points, while Chante Stonewall totaled 20.
UP NEXT: Marquette travels to Creighton on Friday, Jan. 3 for a 7 p.m. CT tip-off against the Bluejays.
