"The men did really well this weekend, but Villanova is a little deeper than us," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "We knew that Villanova might run away with it on the women's side so the goal for us was to try and get second, but DePaul just edged the women out. I am proud of both teams as they really came to compete, and I feel like we have a lot of unfinished business as we head into outdoor season."
The men have now finished as meet runner-up in each of the last five seasons, while the women placed third after finishing as meet champion or runner-up in each of the previous four campaigns.
On the second day of action at the Spire Institute, two Marquette student-athletes were crowned event champion and three others set new program records.
It was redshirt senior Will Wolf who claimed the first BIG EAST title of his career in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.67 meters. In addition to Wolf's crown, four other MU men and one woman won league titles over the weekend.
Junior Daniel Armstrong successfully defended his spot as the top men's high jumper by winning his third career indoor title in the final field event of the championship. Armstrong reached a top height of 2.15 meters (7-0.5) for the victory and will wait to see if he has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be competed on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Setting new MU records on Saturday were sophomore Joe Keys in the pentathlon (5,338 points), freshman Ben Konopka in the men's 60-meter hurdles (8.14 seconds) and sophomore Emma Moravec in the women's 800-meter run (2:09.60). All three finished second in their respective events.
The Golden Eagles begin the outdoor season on Friday, March 15 at the University of Central Florida's Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Florida.
