The senior guard is the third player in league history to earn the repeat honor
NEW YORK—For the second consecutive year, Marquette women's basketball senior guard Allazia Blockton has been named the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, presented by Sunkist, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Blockton joins Connecticut's Rebecca Lobo (1993-94, 1994-95) and Maya Moore (2009-10, 2010-11) as the only players in BIG EAST history to earn multiple scholar-athlete of the year certificates. With the honor she receives a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies.
The Milwaukee native owns a 3.587 cumulative grade point average, pursuing her undergraduate degree in advertising, while minoring in biological sciences. Blockton earned BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors in each of her first three seasons at Marquette and is on pace for a fourth in 2018-19. She also earned the Chi Alpha Sigma Award in 2016, 2017 and 2018, which recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 3.4 or higher.
"What Allazia has been able to do in the classroom, on the court and in the community is very special," head coach Carolyn Kieger said. "She has dominated everything she has put her mind to in the past four years. We are incredibly proud of the player she has become, but even more so of the person, student and teammate she has transitioned into. The future is bright for her and I have zero doubt in my mind that Allazia will excel wherever life takes her."
Blockton is the BIG EAST Conference's representative on the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) which aims to enhance the total student-athlete experience by protecting student- athlete well-being, fostering a positive student-athlete image and inclusive student-athlete environment, and promoting student-athlete engagement at the national, conference and local levels. Additionally, she frequently participates in events such as Briggs & Al's Run & Walk and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and visits local elementary schools, Girl Scouts clinics and Campus Kitchen.
On the court, Blockton was voted the BIG EAST Player of the Year following the 2017-18 season and garnered the preseason honor prior to the 2018-19 campaign. She became just the seventh player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete and Player of the Year accolades in the same season a year ago. This season, despite suffering an injury which sidelined Blockton early in BIG EAST play, she still finished ranked among the league leaders in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game in conference action and 14.1 ppg overall. Blockton has helped lead the Golden Eagles to one of their finest seasons in program history. Marquette won its second consecutive BIG EAST regular-season title, claimed the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, earned the program's highest national rankings, peaking at No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, and is likely headed to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament.
The BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2018-19 academic year. In addition, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10-member institutions) will receive postgraduate scholarships as the winners of their respective institutions' Scholar-Athlete Award. The winners of the institutional awards are then eligible for the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
