The Golden Eagles totaled a department-record 6,481 community service hours
MILWAUKEE-- Marquette University student-athletes celebrated the 2018-19 academic year on Sunday night at the Annual Blue and Golden Globes award ceremony at Discovery World in Milwaukee.
It was a successful year for the Golden Eagles as the 320 student-athletes volunteered for 6,481 hours of community service combined, setting an athletic department record and far surpassing the goal of 5,550 total hours. Men's lacrosse paved the way with an impressive 1,094.5 hours, while women's track and field/cross country compiled 911.5 hours of service. Overall, Marquette completed these hours at 87 locations and organizations in the Milwaukee community.
"Marquette student-athletes work incredibly hard everyday on the court, in the classroom and in the community in order to be the difference every day," Marquette Vice President and Director of Athletics, Bill Scholl said. "We are very proud of the community service record that our student-athletes set and know that they are incredible ambassadors for the University."
Women's soccer was announced as the winner of the prestigious MAGIS Team Spirit Cup, which is a competition between all Marquette teams focusing on four different categories:
Men's cross country won the 'LEARN: Academic Achievement' category, finishing with the highest male GPA in spring 2018 and earning the sport excellence team award for the BIG EAST with the highest men's cross country team GPA in the league. A total of 15 runners were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in spring 2018 with 20 runners on the list for fall 2019. There were 15 representatives named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2017-18 academic year, while five student-athletes are members of Chi Alpha Sigma and seven are members of other honor societies at Marquette.
Volleyball emerged as winners of the 'EMPOWER and ACT: Athletes Support Athletes' as the team posted eight pictures on Instagram supporting fellow student-athletes and attended eight events supporting other teams.
In the final category, 'SERVE: Community Service Participation' men's basketball won with 448 total hours of community service at over 12 locations and posted five pictures on Instagram of the team engaged in the community service.
"Women's soccer senior Jamie Kutey needs to receive a lot of the praise," Nicolle Skoien, academic counselor and program coordinator said. "As the VP for Service (on the Executive Board for SAAC) she did a great job of encouraging her fellow student-athletes to get involved in the community by attending the events she helped to organize and promote. Jamie whole heartedly jumped into the role and really embodies the pillar of service amongst our student-athletes."
Marquette SAAC also worked with coaches, senior staff and fellow student-athletes to hand out other season-end awards. The Male and Female Rookies of the Year were Hunter Eichorn (men's golf) and Rachel Seraphine (women's track and field), while Markus Howard (men's basketball) and Natisha Hiedeman (women's basketball) were awarded with the Male and Female Record-Breaking Performances of the season.
Women's lacrosse senior Holly Andersen was chosen as this year's "For the Love of the Game" winner for her dedication to the women's lacrosse team even though she is unable to play, while men's lacrosse senior Nick Singleton was named recipient of the Cura Personalis Award, or care of the whole person.
To conclude the evening, the Ralph Metcalfe Senior Awards were handed out, which are one of the highest honors for Marquette Athletics and awarded to a senior male and female student-athlete who demonstrates excellence in service to others, academic excellence and athletic excellence. Hannah Gorin and Eric Fellin were honored for academic achievement, while Allazia Blockton and John Wagner earned the award for athletic excellence. Singleton and Kutey were selected as the winner for the leadership and service to others award.
Marquette president Dr. Lovell selected Blockton to receive the President's Award for the 2018-19 season. Blockton leaves Marquette as the all-time scoring leader with 2,204 career points, marking the first Marquette player, male or female, to surpass 2,000 points and is the all-time leader in field goals made.
