Marquette Sweeps BIG EAST Men's Golf Honors for Second Straight Year

Oliver Farrell, Tyler Leach, and Steve Bailey and Trake Carpenter earned major recognition from the BIG EAST
For the second straight season, Marquette has swept the BIG EAST men's golf end-of-season awards, as Oliver Farrell is the league's 2018-19 player of the year, Tyler Leach is freshman of the year, and Steve Bailey and Trake Carpenter are recognized with coaching staff of the year honors.
Marquette has had major award honorees in four of the last five seasons in the BIG EAST, coinciding with a run of three team conference titles in five years, and four individual medals in five years.Ā The Golden Eagles will participate in NCAA regional play for the third straight season, and second time in three years as a team, at the NCAA Austin Regional, May 13-15 at the University of Texas Golf Course.
OLIVER FARRELL - BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE YEAR
- Farrell (Worcestershire, England) is the fourth BIG EAST player of the year in program history and is the first Marquette player to earn all-conference honors four times in a career.
- He led the BIG EAST in scoring average at 71.17, one of two players in the league with a subpar average (-0.63 vs. par).
- His No. 32 Golfstat NCAA Player Ranking (entering Regional play) is the highest since Mike Van Sickle was No. 1 at the conclusion of the 2009 season - no Marquette player has finished in the top-100 since.
- Farrell had his best career finish at the BIG EAST Championships in April, sixth, on the strength of a final round 69 (3-under-par).Ā He shot a 2-over-par 218 to help lead Marquette to its fourth league title.
- He was MU's top individual finisher in five events, including seven top-10s, while posting eight total tournament scores under par.Ā
TYLER LEACH - BIG EAST FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
- Leach (Spring Valley, Wis.) is the third player in as many seasons to earn BIG EAST freshman of the year honors, following teammates Matthew Bachmann (2017) and Hunter Eichhorn (2018).
- One of four MU players to log 30 rounds entering NCAA Regional play, Leach has been in the five-man lineup for every event in 2018-19.
- Leach enters Regional play with the third-lowest scoring average on the team (73.80) and carried the seventh-lowest average in the BIG EAST during the regular season.
- Was one of four players in the red in the final round of the 2019 BIG EAST Championship with a 2-under-par 70, finishing seventh in his first championship appearance with a 3-over-par 219 - he hadĀ 12 birdies in 54 holes at Callawassie, second-most in the championship, including three in the final round to help MU win the title.
STEVE BAILEY, TRAKE CARPENTER - BIG EAST COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR
- Coaching Marquette in his ninth season, Bailey earns conference honors for the third straight year, and fourth time in the last five years.Ā
- Carpenter, in his second season at MU and fifth overall in coaching, earns league accolades for the second time.Ā
- The Golden Eagles cruised to the BIG EAST title with an impressive final round at Callawassie Island G.C., shooting 7-under-par to pull away for a 24-stroke victory and doing so without having the league's individual medalist.
- The 2019 title caps another accomplished year for Marquette under Bailey and Carpenter - MU entered the national top-25 rankings for the first time in 2017-18, and stayed in the top-50 of the Golfstat NCAA Team Rankings for much of 2018-19, earning a single-digit regional seed for the first time in program history (No. 8, Austin Regional).Ā MU was the only team in the BIG EAST ranked in the nation's top-150.
