MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team has released its schedule for the 2019 fall campaign, head coach Markus Roeders announced on Tuesday afternoon.
"Our team is looking forward to the 2019 season with great excitement," Roeders said. "We think there is great balance with some traditional opponents like Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Michigan and Minnesota in addition to new teams in Colorado State, Ball State, Utah State and Northern Illinois. It's a new year and new opportunities wait for us and our 2019 group. Our team is super excited to play, compete and show our fans how entertaining and successful we will be this year.'"
The Golden Eagles will host nine home matches at Valley Fields, including four BIG EAST Conference contests and regular season games against Michigan, USU, NIU and CSU.
Additionally, Marquette will face Notre Dame in an early-season exhibition match on Aug. 18 in Indiana and head to Colorado State, Ball State and Wisconsin before hosting its first regular season home match on Sept. 1 against the Wolverines.
The Golden Eagles begin the regular season on Aug. 22 at Colorado State and will also welcome the Rams to Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 22 in a rare in-season home-and-home.
Marquette will then face Ball State on Aug. 25 before heading to Madison to face the Badgers in a 7 p.m. matchup on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
"Obviously, we have a unique scenario with Colorado State in the same season, but it worked out well as both teams tried to create their schedules for the fall. And our three-game swing versus Big Ten teams is a great challenge in early September," Roeders said.
Entering September, and including the UW and Michigan matches, the Golden Eagles will alternate road and home matches for nearly a month with road contests at reigning-Big Ten Tournament Champion Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 5 and a game at Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 15. Those games will be separated by the home Utah State match on Sunday, Sept. 8.
The Golden Eagles begin BIG EAST action against reigning-league champion Georgetown on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Washington, D.C. after closing non-conference action against NIU and CSU on Sept. 20 and 22, respectively.
"BIG EAST play will be as competitive as ever," Roeders said. "Starting off at 2018 College Cup participant Georgetown will set a great tone for the rest of our league play. There won't be a single easy BIG EAST match and it will be important for us to play at a real high level in October."
MU hosts its first home conference matches against Providence on Oct. 3 and Creighton on Oct. 6 before heading on the New York/New Jersey portion of the schedule with games at St. John's (Oct. 10) and Seton Hall (Oct. 13).
After a home match against Villanova on Oct. 20, the Golden Eagles host their 'Senior Night' game against Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 24 at Valley Fields.
MU closes out the regular season at Butler on Oct. 27 and at DePaul on Halloween.
The Golden Eagles kick off their year with a home scrimmage against the University of Regina (Saskatchewan) on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at Valley Fields.
"Our exhibition games will help prepare us and an international opponent is something we haven't had during pre-season," Roeders said. "A strong ACC foe in Notre Dame will also be the right test as we prepare for our opener."
Schedule Notables:
Aug. 14 vs. University of Regina (home opener/exhibition)
Aug. 18 at Notre Dame (exhibition)
Aug. 22 at Colorado State (regular season opener)
Aug. 29 at Wisconsin
Sept. 1 vs. Michigan (regular season home opener)
Sept. 15 at Milwaukee
Sept. 29 at Georgetown (BIG EAST opener)
Oct. 24 vs. Xavier (Senior Night)
