Women's Soccer Season Preview

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team begins its 27th season of competition on Thursday in Colorado with a season-opening match against Colorado State.

Returning seniors:

2 Emily Hess (Sr., D, Batavia, Ill.)
- Started all 18 matches in 2018 and has started 51 of 59 matches in which she has played in her MU career
- Posted two assists and fired 17 shots last season and has also played in the midfield
0 Maddy Henry (Sr., GK, Omaha, Neb.)
- Has started all 61 matches of her collegiate career
- Enters the season two saves behind Mo Bothwell (288) for the No. 1 mark in MU history
- Sits second in career saves per match (4.68) and fifth in shutouts all-time at Marquette
7 Bri Jaeger (GS, D, Cedarburg, Wis.)
- Started all 18 matches at center back in 2018 and played 1,675 minutes
- Has scored one goal in each of the last two seasons with both scores coming in the month of September

Returnees with starts in 2018:

15 Alyssa Bombacino (So., F, Naperville, Ill.)
- Tied for the team lead with three goals as a freshman
- Started six of 16 matches in 2018 and recorded a pair of game winners
13 Madison Burrier (So., MF, Dublin, Ohio)
- Started 14 of 18 matches in the midfield and fired six shots
22 Abby Hess (R-Jr., F, Rochester, Minn.)
- Scored a goal and posted three assists in 2018
- Played 909 minutes last season after seeing action in all 21 matches in 2017
20 Maddie Monticello (Jr., MF, Chicago)
- Recorded a pair of assists in 2019
- Started five of the 13 matches in which she appeared on defense
- Switching to holding midfielder this fall
8 Kylie Sprecher (Jr., F, Menomonee Falls, Wis.)
- Scored one goal in 16 matches in 2018
- Finished third on the roster in points in 2017, scoring three goals and recording a team-best six assists
- Earned BIG EAST All-Freshman honors in 2017
24 Katrina Wetherell (So., MF, Peoria, Ariz.)
- All-BIG EAST Preseason Team and a 2018 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection
- Notched a team-high four assists as a freshman, while tying for second on the roster with six points

Expected contributing newcomers:

10 Natalie Yass (GS, MF, Waukesha, Wis.)
- Northern Illinois transfer
- Scored twice in the exhibition opener against the University of Regina on Aug. 14
14 Josie Kelderman (Fr., MF, Glendale, Wis.)
- Started both exhibition matches in the midfield
- Played club soccer with North Shore United and only two seasons with Nicolet High School
25 Addie Shock (Fr., D, Dublin, Ohio)
- Started both exhibition matches
- Younger sister of sophomore midfielder Macey Shock
19 Alex Campana (Fr., F, Natick, Mass.)
- Saw significant action in both exhibitions

Seniors: 4
Juniors: 8
Sophomores: 7
Freshmen: 11

Schedule:

The Golden Eagles begin the year with their first three regular season contests on the road before commencing their home slate against Michigan on Sept. 1.
Against common non-conference opponents from last season, MU went 1-2 with a win over Milwaukee and losses to Wisconsin and Michigan in 2018.
MU plays a rare non-conference home-and-home series with Colorado State. The Golden Eagles face the Rams in the season lid-lifter on Aug. 22 and welcome them to Milwaukee for a Sunday, Sept. 22 matinee.
BIG EAST play begins on Sunday, Sept. 29 at defending league champion Georgetown
Senior Night is Thursday, Oct. 24 against Xavier
The BIG EAST semifinals and title match will be held in Omaha, Nebraska.

Tickets and Promotions:

Tickets for all regular season home games are now on sale. Single game tickets are priced at $5 while groups of fifteen-or-more are $2 per person. Season tickets are $45 and include admission to all games as well as an exclusive Marquette Soccer scarf. For groups, call the ticket office at 414-288-4668.
The annual petting zoo returns on Sunday, Sept. 8 for the match against Utah State
Giveaways throughout the year include Chick fil-a, Ian's Pizza, MU tank tops and umbrella
MU's breast cancer awareness game is Sunday, Oct. 20 against Villanova
