The Golden Eagles add depth, talent with 2019 freshmen
MILWAUKEE – Marquette women's lacrosse head coach Meredith Black and her staff welcome the addition of 13 Marquette women's lacrosse newcomers for the 2019-20 academic year.
Â
"We're very excited to welcome 13 freshmen into our program," Black said. "These freshmen cover every position and bring a significant amount of talent into our program."
Â
All newcomers will have the full four years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles and are set to begin practicing this week as the team starts the fall portion of its season.
Â
"All of these girls have been committed to us for a long time, so we are happy to finally have them on campus," Black said. "We're looking forward to getting them into the swing of things at practice and for them to help take our program to the next level."
The class is made up of six midfielders, four attackers, two defenders and one goalie. Seven states are represented, including four from Minnesota and two from Illinois, New Jersey and Wisconsin. Maryland, Michigan and New York are also represented.
Â
"We had a variety of needs we sought out to fulfill with the graduation of several top contributors from last season. I feel like we did that with this class as several of these freshmen can make an immediate impact on the field this season," Black said.
Â
The 2018-19 season marked significant progress in the seventh year of Meredith Black's tenure at MU. The Golden Eagles once again earned the opportunity to play in the postseason, making it to the BIG EAST tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Â
The team earned its highest-ever seed in the conference tournament (No. 2) and hosted a BIG EAST tournament game at Valley Fields for the first time in program history. On senior night, Marquette set another program record after a 14-12 victory over No. 24 Georgetown, marking MU's first-ever triumph over a top-25 opponent.
