WSOC hosts Michigan Sunday in home opener

The Golden Eagles look to improve on their 4-2 record against the Wolverines
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team hosts the University of Michigan at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Valley Fields in its home opener.
The match, which will stream live through GoMarquette.com's All-Access player, is the second contest of a doubleheader with the men's squad (noon versus UC Davis). The first 200 students will receive a Marquette Soccer tank top.
The Golden Eagles hold a 4-2 edge in the series with the Wolverines and had won four in a row prior to a 3-2 defeat in Ann Arbor last season. Then-redshirt senior Carrie Madden scored twice in that matchup to give MU a 2-1 lead by the 51st minute, but Michigan scored the game's final two goals for the win.
Following Sunday, MU continues its foray into the Big Ten with a contest at Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 5.
MARQUETTE (0-3-0): The Golden Eagles dropped their first two matches of the year for the first time since 2016 with a 2-0 loss at Colorado State and a 1-0 defeat at Ball State … Marquette out-shot the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, 11-6, but allowed a 72nd minute goal to BSU's Sam Kambol … Freshman Alex Campana and redshirt sophomore Rachel Johnson earned their first career starts at BSU, while freshman Josie Kelderman and Addie Shock did the same in the Aug. 22 season opener … Goalkeeper Maddy Henry made 10 saves in the lid-lifter against the Rams to become MU's all-time saves leader.
LAST TIME OUT: Maddy Henry became the first Marquette keeper with at least 300 career saves in a 1-0 overtime loss at No. 15 Wisconsin on Thursday … Lauren Rice posted the golden goal in the 93rd minute and UW held an 18-1 edge in shots … Kylie Sprecher had MU's lone shot to start the overtime period … MU fell to 5-9-2 all-time against the Badgers with the loss.
MICHIGAN (3-0-0): The Wolverines defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 2-0, on Friday night in Ann Arbor behind goals from Hannah Blake and Meredith Haakenson, who leads the squad with seven points this season … Michigan had a 9-5 advantage in shots and took all seven of the game's corner kicks … U-M won its season opener 5-0 over Marshall and knocked off Utah Valley, 2-1, on Aug. 25 in overtime … Haakenson scored twice against Marshall on Aug. 22 and Michigan held a 23-3 edge in shots … Sarah Stratigakis, who scored in the opener and has six points (2 goals, 2 assists), scored the OT winner against UVU in the 93rd minute … Stratigakis, Nicki Hernandez and Hillary Beall earned preseason all-league honors, while U-M was pegged fifth in the Big Ten.
HENRY IS MARQUETTE'S CAREER SAVES LEADER
• Senior goalkeeper Maddy Henry enters her fourth season as a full-time starter in 2019 and became MU's all-time saves leader against Colorado State on Aug. 22 with 10 stops. She now has 303 in 64 career games and passed Mo Bothwell (288 saves, 1997-00) to move into the top spot. The Omaha, Nebraska native entered her final campaign ranked fifth all-time in minutes played (5,605:30) and eighth goals against (1.25). She also sat second in saves per match (4.68), fifth in save percentage (.786), sixth in career victories (29) and fifth in shutouts (19).

• Against common non-conference opponents from last season, MU went 1-2 in 2018 with a win over Milwaukee and losses to Wisconsin and Michigan.
• MU plays a rare non-conference home-and-home series with Colorado State. The Golden Eagles face the Rams in the season lid-lifter on Aug. 22 and welcome them to Milwaukee for a Sunday, Sept. 22 matinee.
