Julie Clayton and Samuel Johnson set school records in first meet back from winter break
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University track and field teams resumed indoor action on Saturday in a dual meet against Milwaukee in the John Tierney Invitational. The men (77-73) came away victorious while the women fell just short, 76-74.
"This was a fun meet today and I'm really proud of how both teams competed," Marquette head coach Bert Rogers said. "Both team score races were really close and came down to the last couple events."
In a meet that included 14 events on each side, the women's team notched six victories and the men claimed eight.
The highlight of the day for the women was Julie Clayton's effort in the pole vault. She edged out her former PR (3.90 meters), which was No. 2 all-time, and hit the school record with her final attempt of the day at 3.93 m/12-10.72 ft.
On the men's side, Samuel Johnson took home the long jump, triple jump and 60-meter dash titles. His time of 6.80 in the 60-meter dash broke Josh Word's school-record time of 6.84. Freshman Julian Wright also ran a 6.82 in the same race, putting him at No. 2 all-time at MU.
"Having two school records in just the second meet of the season is pretty awesome," Rogers added. "We'll look to build off this effort and continue to improve next weekend."
The team is back in action next Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Notre Dame Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Indiana.
