Eichhorn played in his second all-America event since the end of the fall season
LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona -Ā Marquette junior Hunter Eichhorn placed 30th in the Patriot All-America Invitational on Dec. 28-31 at The Wigwam Golf Course in suburban Phoenix with a 2-over par 212.
The Carney, Michigan native fired a 5-under par 65 in the second round after shooting a 5-over 75 in the tournament's opening round. He closed with a 2-over 72 to end the invitational at two-strokes over par.
Embracing the tradition of a holiday bowl game experience for top golfers over the last eight years, the Patriot All-America Invitational invited a talented field of players to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of those killed or disabled in armed service.Ā
Throughout the tournament, EichhornĀ carried a bag emblazoned with the name ofĀ U.S. Army Sergeant Paul J. AtimĀ of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was assigned to 1st Battalion, 32ndĀ Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division based in Fort Drum, New York and served during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. On April 17, 2011, SGT Atim, 27, and two other soldiers were killed when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device in Ahmid-Khan, Afghanistan.
At last year's event, Eichhorn's Marquette-branded bag had the name of Major Nicholas Ferencz III, a 1985 Marquette University graduate and Naval ROTC Unit member who was killed during a training exercise air collision on Sept. 11, 2000 at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona.Ā
Eichhorn was ranked 32nd in the last Golfstat NCAA Division I player ranking of the fall and 37th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. He finished the fall portion of the schedule with a team-low 70.39 (-1.11 vs. par) stroke average, which leads the BIG EAST.
