Selena Lott led all scorers with 18 points
MILWAUKEE — Junior guard Selena Lott scored a game-high 18 points as the Marquette University women's basketball team used an explosive second half to defeat Providence 85-55 on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
With the win, the Golden Eagles move to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the BIG EAST, keeping them in a tie for second place with the Butler Bulldogs.
Lott led MU in both scoring (18 points) and rebounds (8) while Camryn Taylor scored 15 points and Lauren Van Kleunen tallied 12 points and eight boards of her own. 11 different Golden Eagles touched the floor and all of them had at least one point.
Providence (10-12) led 16-11 after the first quarter as they managed to hold MU to just 3-19 (15.8 percent) shooting. The next two quarters were a different story, however, as the Golden Eagles shot a blistering 22-of-29 from the field (75.8 percent) in the second and third quarters to build a 24-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
MU used a strong defensive effort to throw PC off its game, forcing 19 turnovers and scoring 28 points off those miscues. Jordan King led an unselfish offensive attack with six assists as the Golden Eagles finished with 25 assists on 31 made baskets.
With the win, MU is now 9-1 on the season when scoring 70-or-more points and 5-0 when scoring over 80.
The Friars had three players reach double figures in scoring, led by Mary Baskerville with 11 points. Chanell Williams and Kyra Spiwak each chipped in 10 points on the night.
