MSOC alum Andy Huftalin '12 is in this week's Alumni Spotlight
The Marquette Athletics Alumni Spotlight is presented by Sargento Cheese, headquartered in Plymouth, Wisconsin. For more information on careers at Sargento, visit careers.sargento.com.
Marquette men's soccer players have scattered across the country since graduating college. Our Alumni Spotlight feature will allow us to provide personal and professional updates on the student-athletes who represented the University on the field and continue to be ambassadors today.
This week's Alumni Spotlight is on Andy Huftalin '12. He played in 53 career games and led the team in scoring as a senior with 10 goals. He helped the Golden Eagles to an NCAA tournament bid in 2012 during a spectacular 16-4-1 season.
Andy Huftalin | 2009-12Â | Rockton, Illinois
Current Location: St. Charles, Illinois
Employer/ Profession: I currently work as a Civil Engineer for Trotter and Associates, Inc. out of St. Charles, Illinois. Upon graduating from Marquette University, I began my career as an engineer in Rockford for McClure/IMEG. I also had the honor of fulfilling a lifelong dream of coaching soccer at my high school, as a varsity head coach for the boys and girls teams, for two years.
I worked in Rockford for four years, growing my knowledge base as a draftsman, surveying in the winter months, before moving on to construction. As the resident engineer on a variety of projects, from bridges to water distribution systems, I provided services including supervision of contractors, project documentation and engineering services on behalf of Municipalities and Local Governments. My experiences led me to a consulting contract with FEMA performing damage assessment for natural disasters in Texas before moving to Trotter and Associates primarily as a resident engineer.
Â
Favorite Memories: What I remember best about Marquette was the level of standard at which we held each other both on and off the field. Coach Bennett would say 'perfect practice makes perfect,' he built an environment predicated on pushing each other to be better, never succumbing to excuses. Off the field, I remember a grueling academic schedule within the College of Engineering. Maureen Lewis was my academic advisor within the athletic department, and I couldn't imagine making it to my graduation without her support and encouragement along with the rest of the academic department. If Maureen oversees your team, she will always be your biggest advocate and fan.
The greatest memory I had in my time at Marquette, was our 3-2 victory over No. 2 nationally ranked UConn team my senior season under the lights at Valley Fields. We had a great crowd with a fantastic team effort. That victory catapulted a momentous season for the program, and it was fantastic to be a part of.
Â
Fun Facts: My wife and I currently have five adopted animals, three dogs and two cats. She found our three wonderful pitbulls on the street, two of them in Florida and one in Rockford. I am constantly in fear that she will find more animals to save, I'm hopeful that our expecting a baby girl next year will help with that! She's already an active baby, and will undoubtedly be a future star for the Golden Eagles.
Coach Bennett on Huftalin: "His nickname that we used to call him was "rock face" because one time he fell down during a game and got a bunch of rocks in his face, but got up and carried on what he was doing. We used nickname occasionally, but it epitomized who he was as a player. Andy was so tough, he was dedicated and focused. One time we put him in the game off the bench and it took him just 30 seconds to score a goal. He would always say after that, 'give me 30 seconds coach, and I'll get one for us." He was an unsophisticated yet efficient player. He simplified the game and he never said no to anything we asked of him."
