Golf tied for eighth after round one at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Freshman Aidan Lafferty shot a 2-under 70 to pace the Marquette University men's golf team on Sunday morning in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
The Golden Eagles sit tied for eighth with Maryland with a 1-over par 289, one stroke ahead of Tennessee (No. 27 in Golfstat) and eight strokes back of tournament leader Oklahoma (7-under 281).
Starting on the par-3 10th hole, Lafferty birdied three of his first six holes and came in 1-over on the front nine. The Downers Grove, Illinois native sits tied for seventh with 10 other golfers following the first day of competition.
Sophomore Tyler Leach, medalist at the Crooked Stick Invitational during the fall season, carded an even-par 72 with a pair of birdies offsetting two bogeys.
Fred Haskins Award Watch List junior Hunter Eichhorn started his round on the par-5 eighth hole with a bogey and after a birdie on No. 9, posted a double bogey on No. 11 with a seven. He concluded his round on the front with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole for a 1-over 73 on the day.
Freshman Bhoom Sima-Aree turned in the final counting score for the Golden Eagles with a 2-over 74. He had four birdies and six bogeys.
The Golden Eagles resume action at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course on Monday, Feb. 17 at 6 a.m. Central time.
