The freshman shot a career-low 212 in the Puerto Rico Classic for his first career honor
NEW YORK – Marquette University freshman Aidan Lafferty was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Male Golfer of the Week on Thursday afternoon for his performance at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 16-18.
Lafferty led the Golden Eagles for the first time with a career-low 212 to finish at 4-under par in a loaded field. The Downers Grove, Illinois native fired a pair of 2-under-par rounds of 70 and tied for 13th overall at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.Â
The field featured some of the nation's best golfers and teams, including seven Golfstat top-50 teams, among those No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 18 Georgia. The Golden Eagles tied for 10th in the team standings.
After beginning the season out of MU's starting lineup, Lafferty established himself late during the fall campaign with third- and second-place finishes, respectively, at the Crooked Stick Invitational and the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational. He has now finished at par-or-better in five of his last six rounds.
The accolade is the first of Lafferty's young career and it marks the fifth time in 2019-20 that a Marquette men's golfer has earned the honor. The other two MU golfers to be recognized this season are Hunter Eichhorn (Sept. 12, Oct. 11, Nov. 15) and Tyler Leach (Oct. 17).
