Eichhorn, Leach and Lafferty each earn awards during men’s golf’s annual banquet
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team held its annual banquet virtually on Saturday, honoring its senior class of Matthew Bachmann and Matt Murlick as well as conferring four team awards.
Junior Hunter Eichhorn was named the team's player of the year and the 2019-20 Win the Day Award recipient. Sophomore Tyler Leach turned in the 2019-20 Performance of the Year in his first collegiate victory at the Crooked Stick Invitational on Oct. 14-15, while freshman Aidan Lafferty claimed the STRIVE Award for displaying strong character, positive energy, grit, discipline, love and excellence during his rookie campaign.
Eichorn and Leach combined to earn three individual tournament crowns during the fall and recorded two of the eight lowest single-season scoring averages in program history while earning PING All-Midwest Region honors.
Eichhorn notched his third straight season with a sub-72 scoring average, finishing the year at a career-best 70.81 (-0.76 versus par) with 14 rounds at par or lower out of 21. The 2019-20 PING All-American enters his senior year holding Marquette's lowest career scoring average (71.50), better than 2009 Byron Nelson Award winner Mike Van Sickle's 71.69 strokes. He earned a pair of tournament victories as a junior at the Windon Memorial Classic on Sept. 16-17 and at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Oct. 6-8. The Carney, Michigan native was also a member of the final watch list for the Fred Haskins Award, honoring the year's outstanding college golfer.
Leach earned his first tournament championship at Crooked Stick with a 6-under par 210 and ended his year with a 71.90 stroke scoring average (0.33 versus par). He finished at par-or-better in 12 of the 21 rounds he played as a sophomore and earned the first BIG EAST weekly honor of his career on Oct. 17 for his play at Crooked Stick. The Spring Valley, Wisconsin native earned league rookie of the year honors in 2018-19 in addition to All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades.
Lafferty started the season out of MU's lineup but worked his way up throughout, culminating in BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honors for a team-best finish in the year's final tournament in Puerto Rico. The Downers Grove, Illinois native finished with MU's third-lowest scoring average (73.07 strokes) and finished at par-or-better in five of his final six rounds.
The Golden Eagles played seven tournaments in 2019-20 and will look to defend their 2018-19 BIG EAST Championship next season.
