10 new student-athletes will play for Coach Black in 2020-21
MILWAUKEE – Marquette women's lacrosse head coach Meredith Black and her staff welcome the addition of 10 Marquette women's lacrosse newcomers for the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
"We're very excited to welcome 10 new freshmen into our program," Black said. "As a staff we feel strongly that this class will add to our collection of talent and help bring our program to the next level."
Â
All newcomers will have the full four years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles and are set to arrive on campus this fall.
Â
"This group of girls has been committed to us for a long time, so we are thrilled to finally have them on campus," Black said. "We're looking forward to getting them into the swing of things at practice and help them get adjusted to collegiate lacrosse."
The 2020 class is made up of four defenders, four midfielders and two attackers. Four states are represented, with four girls hailing from Maryland, three from Illinois, two from Minnesota and one from New Jersey.
Â
"We have almost our whole team coming back from last season and we feel like this class will complement our returners," Black said. "We're confident this class will be able to develop into outstanding contributors during their time here. At the same time, several of these freshmen can make an immediate impact on the field this season."
Â
The Golden Eagles were 6-4 in the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season. MU's last game on March 11 was an 11-goal victory over Detroit Mercy as it tied a single-game program-record in goals with 23.Â
MU also took home wins in 2020 against Canisius, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Fresno State and Niagara. The season was canceled before BIG EAST play was scheduled to begin on March 14.Â
The 2021 season will mark the ninth season of Marquette women's lacrosse, all with coach Black at the helm. MU loses just one starter and two contributors overall from last season's team and the top-10 scorers all return.
In 2019, the team earned its highest-ever seed in the conference tournament (No. 2) and hosted a BIG EAST tournament game at Valley Fields for the first time in program history. On senior night, Marquette set another program record after a 14-12 victory over No. 24 Georgetown, marking MU's first-ever triumph over a top-25 opponent.
