MILWAUKEE – Following a truncated 2019-20 campaign, the Marquette University men's golf team is set to begin the 2020-21 season on Jan. 31 and will play in five events prior to the BIG EAST Conference Championships on April 29.
"We are extremely excited and fortunate for the opportunity to play tournament golf again," Marquette head coach Steve Bailey said. "We are thankful for all the hard work put in by our administration and sports medicine staff, to make this season possible. We have put together a competitive schedule, giving our team the opportunity to play elite programs at some of the best venues in the country."
The Golden Eagles begin the spring at the BIG EAST Match Play Championships in Belleair, Florida at the Pelican Golf Club. The event is set to run from Sunday, Jan. 31 through Tuesday, Feb. 2 and will feature Seton Hall, DePaul and UConn in addition to MU.
Marquette will compete in one more event in February at The Prestige in La Quinta, California at the PGA West – Norman Course on Feb. 14-17. The event will be hosted jointly by UC Davis and Stanford and include some of the most high-profile programs in the country, including Pepperdine, Oklahoma State, SMU, Northwestern and most of the Pac-12 Conference.
The lone event for the Golden Eagles in the month of March is back in Florida at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City for the Valspar Collegiate on March 14-16. The University of Houston is set to host the event across the Gulf Coast from its Texas campus and will welcome Pepperdine, Arizona State, Duke, Florida State, SMU and Wake Forest, among others.
Marquette begins the year's fourth month at the Calusa Invite on April 3-6 in Naples, Florida at Calusa Pines Golf Club before heading to Iowa City, Iowa and Finkbine Golf Course for the Hawkeye Invitational. MU was scheduled to participate in the 2020 Hawkeye Invitational before the season was cut short and this year's event will take place on April 16-18. Both events will be hosted by the University of Iowa and the Calusa event will include Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma, Purdue, Texas and Wake Forest in addition to the Golden Eagles and Hawkeyes.
Spring championship play begins April 29 at the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, set to be hosted by Callawassie Island G.C. for the seventh-straight event as part of a deal that extends through 2022. Marquette is in search of its fourth team championship in seven years, while MU players (Matthew Bachmann - 2017, Hunter Eichhorn - 2018) have won two of the last three individual titles.
