MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team and first-year head coach Frank Pelaez have released a 2020-21 schedule, which includes nine home matches at Valley Fields, beginning with a Feb. 5 season opener against Chicago State.
The Golden Eagles open their campaign with five non-conference home matches in February before welcoming Creighton on Thursday, March 4 to open BIG EAST Conference action at noon Central time.
MU's opening weekend matches against Chicago State and Illinois State (Sunday, Feb. 7) will be followed by three exhibition contests against Loyola Chicago, Northern Illinois and Wisconsin-Parkside on Feb. 14, Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, respectively.
"Being able to have a non-conference season is such a gift because so many people do not have that ability," Pelaez said. "We are grateful that we have a facility at Marquette that can host early-season matches and for colleagues that have reached out and I reached out to last minute to try to get games. Everyone wants teams to play before they get into conference play. In BIG EAST competition, if we have to play people back-to-back, and maybe the same team four times in a row in order to get into a conference tournament championship. I think everybody right now is willing to do whatever it takes."
Marquette will play a total of eight league matches against the other four Midwest members of the BIG EAST. Following the contest against Creighton, MU heads to DePaul on March 7 and is slated for a Thursday matchup with Butler in Indianapolis on March 11. MU will close out the first half of BIG EAST action on March 18 at home against Xavier before its first rematch of the year, a Sunday, March 21 clash with Creighton in Omaha.
The final two home matches are slated for Thursday, March 25 and Sunday, March 28 against DePaul and Butler, respectively.
The Golden Eagles are set to close out the regular season on Thursday, April 8 at Xavier and have built in make-up dates around the game against the Musketeers.
BIG EAST Conference Championship play is set for April 14-17 in Providence, R.I. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, where the top four teams in league action will compete.
PLEASE NOTE:
Schedules and championship information is subject to change based on local COVID-19 developments. All Marquette home competitions will continue to be held without fans until further notice in accordance with state and local guidelines. MU is working with health officials to evaluate a potential return for fans in some capacity this season.
