MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team has announced its full schedule for the spring of 2022, beginning on Feb. 13-15 at the Puerto Rico Invitational.
In total, the Golden Eagles return to two events in which they competed this past spring before the BIG EAST Championships, which makes its return to Callawassie Island at the end of April.
"We always strive to build a schedule that combines world-class venues with elite competition, and our spring lineup certainly checks both boxes," said MU head coach Steve Bailey. "We look forward to returning to some familiar tournaments and are fortunate to play a PGA Tour venue a few weeks before the actual Tour event."Â
Marquette, which opens its spring at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, has competed in Puerto Rico in 2018, 2019, and 2020, although the previous events have taken place at a different course. The Golden Eagles placed 11th in 2018, eighth in 2019, and T-10th in 2020. In Marquette's most recent trip to Puerto Rico for the Purdue-hosted tournament in spring of 2020, then-freshman Aidan Lafferty finished a team-high 13th on his way to BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honors.Â
Marquette resumes spring competition in South Carolina on March 14-15 in the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Appalachian State University at Surf Golf & Beach Club.
The Golden Eagles return trips this spring are to the Valspar Collegiate Invitational and The Calusa Cup. The Valspar, set for March 28-29 in Palm City, Florida at the Floridian National Golf Club, is hosted by the University of Houston. In last year's event, eight of 11 squads were ranked or were receiving votes in the Coaches' Poll, including four teams in the top 10.
Marquette returns to action in the Sunshine State less than a week later on April 3-5 in Naples at Calusa Pines Golf Club in the University of Iowa's Calusa Cup. MU finished ninth at last year's tournament and Hunter Eichhorn led the squad in a tie for 29th.
The Golden Eagles close the regular season with their first visit to the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on April 3-5 at Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by Ohio State University.
The BIG EAST Championships are back in Okatie, South Carolina on April 29-May 1 at the Callawassie Island Golf Club. The Golden Eagles placed in second last year at Streamsong Resort Blue in Florida as Eichhorn earned co-medalist honors. In 2019, Marquette captured a team title in the last BIG EAST tournament at Callawassie Island.
The NCAA Regionals are set for May 15-18 at venues across the country. Eichhorn made his third regional appearance this past spring in the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional, where he tied for 44th at 7-over par.
