MILWAUKEE – The No. 25 Marquette University women's volleyball team closed its first weekend of BIG EAST Conference play with another sweep of DePaul (25-14, 25-20, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (6-2) hit a season-high .339 (45-7-112) in the victory and were paced by 13 kills on 27 errorless swings from Taylor Wolf, who also posted 14 assists and 10 digs. Setter Claire Mosher notched 24 assists and 11 digs, while Hope Werch and Kaitlyn Lines each had eight kills.
The Golden Eagles hit .371 in the opening frame and Wolf added five kills as MU claimed the 25-14 win. MU went ahead 20-10 on one of Savannah Rennie's three kills in the set before a final DePaul timeout.
The second set was the tightest of the match, but Marquette broke free from a one-point lead, 14-13, with six straight for a commanding 20-13 edge. Werch led MU in the second with six kills on eight attacks as Marquette hit .268.
MU gained the advantage midway through the third frame after a call was overturned in the Golden Eagles favor to grant them an 11-9 lead. Marquette won the set, 25-15, to claim it's third straight sweep this season and second in as many matches against DePaul this weekend.
Marquette has met DePaul on more occasions than any other BIG EAST opponent (62) and second only to Milwaukee in number of meetings in program history. The Golden Eagles hold a 33-29 edge in the all-time series against the Blue Demons following 19 consecutive wins, with their last loss in the series coming on Nov. 1, 2008. Theis is 14-0 in his Marquette career and has not lost a set to DePaul since Oct. 15, 2016, a five-set win in Chicago.
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST play on Feb. 19-20 at the Al McGuire Center against Creighton. Marquette previously split a weekend series against the Bluejays in Omaha on Feb. 5-6 and most recently swept them, 3-0.
Marquette's athletic teams will wear gold jerseys and/or shoelaces in their contests Feb. 17-21 in support of women's volleyball player Sarah Rose, who is undergoing treatment for Ewing's Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. All are encouraged to use the hashtag #Gold4Sarah to post their support on social media throughout the week. In addition to Rose, the Golden Eagles will also honor seniors Sandy Mohr, Martha Konovodoff, Gabbi Martinez and Elizabeth Orf at Saturday's match for their careers in Blue & Gold.
