MOUNT PLEASANT, Michigan - The Marquette women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 decision to Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Lydia Foust tallied her second straight hat trick while Shea Garcia and Caroline Steller scored two goals apiece to lead the Golden Eagles (0-2, 0-0 BIG EAST). Megan Menzuber added a goal and an assist and Leigh Steiner and Emma Soccodato tallied a goal each for MU.
Central Michigan (1-0, 0-0 MAC) struck first, scoring the first two goals of the game before Menzuber answered with her seventh goal of the season to get MU on the board. After the Golden Eagles tied the game at two with a goal from Steller, CMU responded with two goals of its own to take a 4-2 lead. The Chippewas lead didn't last long as Foust scored the first of her three goals just 46 seconds later to start a 4-0 run for MU. CMU tacked on one more goal with just two seconds left in the half and the Golden Eagles headed into the break with a 6-5 lead.
Senior goalie Sophia Leva started in net and saved seven first half shots (.583 SV%) to spearhead MU's defense.
The Chippewas came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes to take an 8-6 lead. MU responded with two goals shortly after from junior attacker Shea Garcia to tie the game back up at eight. The offensive pace slowed down for the Golden Eagles after the Garcia goals as they went the next 14 minutes without scoring. CMU, however, scored three more goals to take its largest lead of the game at 11-8.
MU cut the three-goal deficit to just one at 11-10 with goals from Leigh Steiner and Lydia Foust, but couldn't tie the game as CMU controlled possession for most of the final three minutes and ran out the clock.
Â
Audrey Whiteside led the Chippewas with four goals and an assist while Natalie Karlen and Maggie Diebold tacked on two goals apiece.
