Woodward on BIG EAST MLAX Honor Roll

The defenseman picked up five ground balls in a one-goal loss to No. 9 Denver
NEW YORK – Marquette University redshirt freshman defenseman Mason Woodward was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll for men's lacrosse, it was announced on Tuesday morning.
Woodward picked up five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers in a narrow 10-8 loss to then-No. 9/10 Denver on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields. The Towson, Maryland native led a Marquette defense that held firm as it rallied from an early 6-1 deficit for the one-goal defeat.
Woodward also jumped up on the wing to help the Golden Eagles win a few faceoffs after some early struggles at the dot. He continued the strides made during a true freshman campaign in which he was one of the best rookies in the country, setting a program record with eight ground balls in his debut last Feb. 1 against Cleveland State.
The Golden Eagles resume conference play on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Valley Fields against Villanova.

Jake Carraway, Georgetown, Grad Student, A (Annapolis, Md.)
Georgetown attacker Jake Carraway led the No. 8/9 Hoyas to a 16-1 league win over No. 16/18 Villanova as he accounted for more than half of the Blue and Gray's scoring on Sunday. Carraway scored eight goals, moving him one shy of GU's career goal record of 153, held by his former teammate Daniel Bucaro. The attacker also added an assist for nine points in the win.
BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
R.J. Romeo, Providence, Grad Student, FOS/Midfield (Wilton, Conn.)
Providence graduate student R.J. Romeo went 20-for-27 (.741) in faceoffs on Sunday which helped the Friars to a 16-8 victory over St. John's in Queens, N.Y. Romeo also picked up a league-best 11 ground balls against the Red Storm and took a shot at the SJU goal.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Gibson Smith, Georgetown, Sr., D (Pelham, N.Y.)
Georgetown senior defender Gibson Smith helped lead a GU defense that limited then-No. 16/18 Villanova to just one goal on eight shots on target in a 16-1 league win. The No. 8/9 Hoyas, led by Smith and the defense, held the Wildcats scoreless for the final 50:51 of the game after surrendering the game's first goal at the 9:09 mark in the first quarter. Georgetown's close defensive unit held Villanova to just 28 shots overall. Smith led a GU man-down unit which held VU off the board on all four attempts. Smith also added on the other side of the field, adding a goal and an assist to the score total. Georgetown has allowed one goal in a game twice before, a 16-1 victory over Catholic in 1980 and a 9-1 win against Vermont in 2005.
Freshman of the Week
T.J. Haley, Georgetown, Fr., A (Shady Side, Md.)
Georgetown rookie attacker T.J. Haley contributed two assists in the 16-1 victory for No. 8/9 Georgetown over No. 16/18 Villanova on Sunday. Haley, a starter for the Hoyas, the sixth and 12th goals of the outing. The Hoyas assisted on 12 of their 16 goals scored.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Alex Simmons, Denver, Jr., M
Simmons scored four of Denver's 10 goals in a 10-9 league in at Marquette this weekend. It was Simmons' first career hat trick. Three of his four goals were scored in the first quarter, accounting for Denver's 3-1 lead.
Malik Sparrow, Denver, So., LSM/D
Sparrow caused a career high three turnovers in the Pioneers' 10-9 league win at Marquette on Saturday. He helped lead Denver's ride that forced Marquette into eight failed clears, including seven in the first half. Denver led 6-3 at halftime.
