Volleyball earns BIG EAST semifinal berth

NEW YORK – The Marquette University women's volleyball team has earned the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Division and will face East No. 1 seed St. John's in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship, presented by JEEP, on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Central time at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Nebraska.
With two weekend victories against Xavier, Creighton earned the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Division and will face the No. 2 seed in the East Division, ProvidenceÂ

The tournament takes place Friday, April 2, and Saturday April 3. The semifinals will be at Noon ET/11 a.m. Central and 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. Central at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. and will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi. Creighton and Providence will play in the first semifinal, St. John's and Marquette will play in the second.

The tournament final will be played on April 3 on 12:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. CT. The championship game will air on FS1.

Creighton and St. John's were both picked by the conference head coaches to win their respective divisions in the preseason polls. St. John's is the defending BIG EAST Tournament champion. Creighton had won the last five prior.
Providence swept Villanova this weekend with two five-set match wins on Friday and Saturday to finish 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the East Division. It is the first BIG EAST tournament appearance for the Friars since 1999. PC went undefeated at home this season, 6-0. An original member of the BIG EAST Conference, Providence played as an Independent from 2003-2009, before spending the 2010-13 seasons in the America East. The Friars rejoined the league for volleyball in 2014.

Creighton (10-3, 7-1 BIG EAST), defeated Xavier 3-2 on Saturday, and 3-0 on Sunday. St. John's finished the regular season on Tuesday, clinching the No. 1 seed in the East. The Red Storm finished 10-3 overall, 6-2 in the East. Marquette went 4-2 in league play, 9-3 overall before sitting out the last two weekends on a COVID-related pause. The Golden Eagles have not played a game since March 6.
