Wetherell, Twombly Earn All-BIG EAST Accolades

Marquette University women's soccer players Katrina Wetherell (Peoria, Ariz./Kellis HS) and Elsi Twombly (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly HS) have been recognized among the best in the BIG EAST Conference, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.

Wetherell earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and Twombly was tabbed to the All-Freshman Team. Selections were made in a survey of the conference's head coaches.

"I am excited and proud of both Elsi and Katrina for being recognized for their talents and contributions on the field," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "They are both extremely committed to being great ambassadors of our program, both on and off the field, and I am proud of the growth they have both had this season.

"This year presented some unique challenges, but I am proud of the way the team responded and we have begun to build a great foundation for the program moving forward," Pelaez added.

Wetherell started 8-of-10 matches for Marquette this spring and finished second on the team in goals (2) and third in points (5). She was also among the team leaders in shots and had one game-winning score.

Twombly led the roster in goals (3) and points (8) in her first season at MU, appearing in all 10 matches. She was tabbed the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Feb. 15 and also topped the team in shots (19) and shots on goal (10).

The Golden Eagles concluded the year 6-4-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the BIG EAST, earning a share of second in the Midwest Division.
