Sophia Leva named MU's MVP
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team has announced its team award winners for the 2021 campaign, led by the squad's most valuable player, Sophia Leva.
The senior goalie was a major reason for MU's success this season and she put together one of the finer seasons in school history between the pipes. Leva ranked No. 1 in the BIG EAST in saves (134), saves per game (8.25) and save percentage (.482) among goalies who played at least 10 games. Leva started in 15 of 16 games in 2021 and recorded multiple saves in every game. She tallied five-or-more saves in 14 games and had six double-digit save games. She tallied season-bests of 15 saves against then top-20 ranked Louisville and in a road win at Georgetown.
Her seven wins this season put her at No. 2 all-time for a single season in MU history and her 134 saves put her at No. 3 all-time. Her .482 save percentage for the year is the No. 2 mark in program history.
A First Team All-BIG EAST selection, junior midfielder Lydia Foust earned the team's 'Hustle Award' a year after being named Most Improved Player in 2020. The Redwood City, Calif., native ranked third on the team in points (34) and goals (28) while leading the team in free position goals (7). Foust tallied points in 13 of 16 games and scored goals in every game but three. She had nine multi-goal games and five games with three-or-more goals. She had five points (three goals, two assists) in the season-opener at Cincinnati and four goals at Villanova (March 26). Her seven free position goals put her in a tie at No. 3 in the league. She also ranks No. 5 all-time at MU with 17 free position goals.
Freshman midfielder Kelsey Koch earned the team's 'Most Improved' award. The Glenview, Ill., native played in two games during her freshman year and continued to show outstanding growth in practice throughout the 2021 season.
Freshman attacker Kaitlyn Sydnor was given the 'MU Rah Rah' Spirit Award for showing energy and enthusiasm in all that she did. The Jarrettsville, Md., native brought positivity, spirit and love for Marquette and the team on a daily basis.
