Eichhorn shot his lone round under par on Wednesday at the Golf Club of Tennessee
KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tennessee – Marquette University redshirt junior Hunter Eichhorn concluded his 2021 campaign with a final round 70 to tie for 44th at the Kingston Springs Regional of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
Eichhorn (7-over par, 76-74-70--220) finished his third round at the Golf Club of Tennessee at 1-under and his score of 70 is a career low for him out of all nine rounds he has played in NCAA regional action. The Carney, Michigan native moved 12 spots up the individual leaderboard on Wednesday, gaining three strokes on the first five holes with a birdie on the par-4 first and an eagle on the par-5 fifth. He added a pair of birdies on the back nine, but also had a double bogey on the par-3 14th and a bogey on the par-3 16th.
After beginning the tournament with a 5-over 76 on Monday, Eichhorn improved each day, jumping from 59th on Monday to 56th after Tuesday's second round 74.
It was the third NCAA regional appearance for the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Year, who is Marquette's first at-large selection to NCAA competition since former teammate Matt Murlick in 2018. M Club Hall of Famer Mike Van Sickle also earned a pair of at-large bids to regionals, selected in 2007 and in 2009 as the No. 1-seeded player. Eichhorn and Van Sickle are the only MU golfers to have competed in three NCAA regionals.
San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai (71-67-67--205) earned medalist honors by closing the tournament with consecutive 4-under 67s to finish the tournament at 8-under. The Aztecs (-5) were one of five advancing teams, along with tournament-host and regional champion Vanderbilt (-18, 279-280-275--834), as well as Arkansas (-7), NC State (-3) and Clemson (-3). Those five teams were the highest-rated squads in the event, according to Golfstat, and advance to the NCAA Championships on May 28-June 2 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Michigan State's James Piot (T4, 72-68-68--208 (-5)) advances as the highest-finishing individual not on an advancing team.
