Ward Competes In Triple Jump At NCAA West Prelims

BIG EAST champion finishes 37th as senior concludes
The Marquette University track & field teams opened action at the 2021 NCAA West Preliminary Championships on Friday afternoon with action by senior Marquis Ward in the triple jump.
The BIG EAST outdoor champion finished 37th with a top effort of 49-2.25 on his second of three attempts to conclude the year, battling through cramps caused by the warm weather conditions.
"Marquis had a solid day, was very consistent and successful on all three of his attempts," head coach Bert Rogers said. "He was hoping for a big mark, but unfortunately wasn't able to put it out there today. He had an excellent season and I'm extremely proud of him and excited to have him returning for the indoor season next year."
Junior Lindsey Mirkes, also a BIG EAST champion, will compete in the high jump at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon looking to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Senior Joe Keys has already earned a spot at the national meet in the decathlon.
