MILWAUKEE – Marquette University head volleyball coach Ryan Theis has announced the addition of middle blocker Anastasija Svetnik, as a freshman transfer from Oregon State.
"Anastasija is a very skilled middle." Theis said. "She has a nice arm, good size and a significant amount of international experience. We look forward to getting her in our gym and will enjoy learning about her culture."
The 6-foot-3 Svetnik will arrive on campus this summer with four years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles thanks to a NCAA free year this spring.
The native of Minsk, Belarus played all 69 sets in 18 matches as a true freshman for the Beavers, posting 85 kills, a .305 hitting percentage and 45 blocks. She averaged 1.23 kills and 0.65 blocks per set, and recorded career highs in kills (12) and blocks (six) against UCLA on March 28. The middle notched five of her 11 service aces this season against Cal on March 7, the most for any OSU player in 2021, to earn Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week honors.
Her mother, Elena, captained the Belarus National Volleyball Team, and her father, Sergey, played for the national basketball team for 10 years and earned the title of Master of Sport of the USSR. Svetnik played for one of the top club teams in Belarus in Minsk from 2017-20, earning accolades as the best middle blocker at multiple international tournaments and the Belarusian youth championships. She helped lead her squad to a second-place finish at the Russian Open Youth Volleyball Championships during the 2019-20 season. In addition to her club play, Svetnik has been a member of the Belarusian National Volleyball Junior Team since the age of 14.
She attended School No. 175 in her native Belarus and was born in Germany.
The Golden Eagles begin the fall season in Hawaii on Aug. 27-29 at the Rainbow Wahine Classic. Marquette opens the season with a Friday, Aug. 27 match against Texas A&M before facing host-Hawai'i on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday.
