Wisconsin native to assist with operations, student-athlete development
Cordell Smith has joined the Marquette University women's basketball program as the Assistant Director of Operations and Director of Student-Athlete Development, head coach Megan Duffy announced Monday afternoon.
Smith will assist with the day-to-day operations of the program, with his focus including player career development, leadership opportunities and diversity and inclusion education. He will work with the freshman transition program and serve as a liaison with ticketing, marketing and donor and alumni relations.
"We are thrilled to welcome Cordell back to our Milwaukee and Marquette communities," Duffy said. "His unique background in various facets of operations, combined with his experience as a two-sport student-athlete will enhance our program immediately. Cordell has a passion to help players off the court and takes great pride in doing whatever it takes to help Marquette continue to rise."
A former NCAA Division II student-athlete, Smith arrives on campus after spending two years at the University of Minnesota, where he served as assistant director of event management. His duties included the development of the department's internship and mentorship programs and participation in the Gopher's Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
He was also a member of the Big Ten Conference Equality Coalition and served on Minneapolis' organizing and host committees for the 2019 Final Four and the 2018 Super Bowl.
The Mequon, Wisconsin, native lettered in both basketball and football at Concordia University St. Paul. He averaged 12.6 points and a team-best 5.9 rebounds per game as a senior in 2013-14 and on the gridiron topped the Golden Bears with 43 receptions for 627 yards (second most) in 2012.
He earned his bachelor's in sports management from CSP in 2015 and his master's in sport management from Minnesota in 2020.
